Shantel Kim MSW, BSW, CYC, RSW
There is no single right reason to begin therapy. Whatever has brought you here is worth exploring. You may feel that the ways you usually cope are no longer working as well, or that anxiety, stress, burnout, or depression are making everyday life harder to manage. As you consider reaching out, you may be looking for a skilled therapist who understands your perspective and offers thoughtful, practical support that goes beyond generic advice or what you can find on your own.
Shantel Kim, MSW, BSW (Hons), CYC, RSW, offers this kind of support by drawing on her education and professional experience across diverse settings and communities. Her approach is also informed by her lived experience as a neurodivergent, racialized therapist with a bicultural background, including her experience navigating systems that do not always respond equitably to people’s needs. She brings a compassionate, non-judgemental approach grounded in the realities of everyday life.
From the beginning, Shantel brings warmth and curiosity to each session. Shantel communicates clearly and aims to make counselling relatable and easy to understand. She works collaboratively with you to identify what feels realistic and useful. Together, you can explore your concerns, what has helped you cope, what may no longer be working, and what changes feel manageable. When appropriate, she may also bring humour into the therapeutic space, recognizing that difficult conversations do not always need to feel overly clinical or distant.
Shantel is registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. She supports people experiencing anxiety, OCD, depression, ADHD and neurodivergence, trauma, substance use concerns, low self-esteem, and difficulty managing emotions, as well as those navigating relationship challenges, conflict, stress, boundaries, major life transitions, and more.
What distinguishes Shantel’s approach is her commitment to understanding you as a whole person. Through her work with children, adolescents, adults, and older adults in a wide range of therapeutic and practice settings, Shantel recognizes that mental health concerns rarely exist in isolation. Relationships, living circumstances, work or school, identity, culture, disability, access to resources, and experiences of discrimination can all shape a person’s well-being. Rather than overlooking parts of your experience, Shantel takes the time to understand how the different aspects of your life are connected and how they may be affecting your well-being.
Shantel draws on a broad range of evidence-informed approaches, including cognitive behavioural therapy, narrative therapy, DBT-informed strategies, motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness, and solution-focused therapy. Rather than following one fixed approach, she adapts sessions to reflect who you are and what matters most to you. Shantel listens carefully and helps you make sense of what you are experiencing, notice patterns, and explore practical ways forward. Sessions may include psychoeducation, practical strategies, guided conversations, and thoughtful questions that encourage reflection and new perspectives.

Alisha Bains
Healthy eating shouldn’t mean following a rigid diet, giving up the foods you love, or trying to fit your life into a one-size-fits-all meal plan. Alisha believes nutrition works best when it is designed around you - your health, goals, culture, schedule, budget, preferences, and everyday life.
Whether you want to manage your weight, improve your overall health, navigate a chronic condition, feel more confident about your food choices, or learn how to eat well without following another restrictive diet, Alisha provides practical, evidence-based guidance that can be adapted to your individual needs.
Expertise Grounded in Science and International Experience
Alisha is a Registered Dietitian with an academic and professional background spanning Canada and the United Kingdom.
She completed her Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biological Sciences at Brock University, developing a strong foundation in human biology, physiology, and the science underlying health and disease. She later moved to the United Kingdom, where she completed her Master of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition at London Metropolitan University and trained in a variety of clinical settings.
Alisha has since gained professional experience as a dietitian in both the GTA and London, allowing her to work with diverse populations and healthcare teams across different models of care. Her background includes lifestyle medicine, chronic disease management, and specialist weight management.
While working in specialist weight-management services in the United Kingdom, Alisha supported individuals living with obesity and complex health conditions through long-term, evidence-based behaviour change. She also gained extensive experience supporting individuals using GLP-1 medications (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro) and understands the unique nutritional considerations that can arise when appetite and food intake change during treatment.
Her areas of practice include weight management, GLP-1 nutrition support, diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, general healthy eating, vegetarian and vegan nutrition, South Asian diets, neurodivergent-friendly nutrition, meal planning, and healthy eating on a budget.
There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Approach to Nutrition
Alisha strongly believes that nutrition recommendations should adapt to the individual, not the other way around.
Two people can have the same health goal and require completely different approaches to achieve it. Your medical history, medications, appetite, culture, finances, work schedule, cooking ability, family responsibilities, sensory preferences, favourite foods, and previous experiences with dieting can all influence what is realistic for you.
That is why Alisha takes the time to understand the person behind the nutrition assessment.
Rather than automatically providing a standard meal plan or telling you exactly what you must eat, she helps you develop the knowledge and practical skills to make healthier choices independently. Together, you can explore how to build balanced meals, improve the nutritional quality of foods you already enjoy, find convenient options for busy days, navigate grocery shopping on a budget, or make changes that accommodate specific taste, texture, cultural, or dietary preferences.
You do not need unlimited time, an unlimited grocery budget, or a taste for traditionally “healthy” foods to improve your nutrition. Alisha will work with what is realistically available to you.
A Supportive, Non-Judgmental Approach
Nutrition appointments should be a place where you can speak openly about food without worrying about being judged.
Alisha recognizes that eating habits are influenced by countless factors and understands the journey is not to criticize your current diet or expect perfection. Instead, she works collaboratively with you to identify what is already going well, understand the challenges getting in your way, and determine which changes feel both meaningful and achievable.
This can be particularly important if you have spent years dieting, have struggled to maintain previous changes, feel overwhelmed by conflicting nutrition information, or find that conventional nutrition advice does not work well with the way you live.
For neurodivergent clients, this may mean adapting recommendations around sensory preferences, routines, executive functioning challenges, food preparation, or decision fatigue. For clients from various cultural backgrounds, it may mean finding ways to support health goals while continuing to enjoy culturally meaningful foods. For vegetarian and vegan clients, this may involve creating a balanced, nutritionally complete approach that aligns with your dietary preferences and individual health goals.
The goal is not perfection. It is finding an approach that you can realistically continue.
Weight Management and GLP-1 Nutrition Support
If weight management is one of your goals, Alisha recognizes that body weight is influenced by much more than willpower.
Genetics, appetite regulation, medical conditions, medications, sleep, stress, environment, finances, culture, and lifestyle can all influence weight and eating behaviours. Drawing on her experience in specialist weight-management care, Alisha helps you move away from short-term dieting and toward habits that support both your immediate goals and long-term health.
If you are taking a GLP-1 medication, nutrition remains an important part of your treatment. Alisha can help you navigate changes in appetite and food intake while continuing to meet your nutritional needs. This may include guidance around protein, balanced meals, meal timing, reduced appetite, maintaining nutritional adequacy, and developing eating habits that can support your health throughout your treatment journey.
Looking at Your Health as a Whole
Nutrition is only one part of your overall health, and sometimes achieving your goals requires more than one perspective.
Alisha’s experience working within multidisciplinary healthcare teams in Canada and the United Kingdom has shaped her collaborative approach to care. Depending on client needs, she can work alongside other members of your healthcare team so that your nutrition recommendations complement your broader health goals and treatment plan.
This means your nutrition care does not have to exist in isolation. As your health, treatment, circumstances, and priorities change, your nutrition strategy can change with you.
Ultimately, Alisha does not want you to feel dependent on a meal plan. She wants you to leave your appointments with a better understanding of nutrition, practical strategies you can actually use, and the confidence to make informed decisions about food in everyday life.
Because the most effective nutrition plan isn’t the one that looks perfect on paper - it’s the one that works for you.
Book a nutrition assessment with Alisha to explore your health goals, current eating habits, lifestyle, and individual needs and begin building an approach to nutrition that fits your life.
